The Upside Down world doesn’t end on Netflix.
Stranger Things Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have revealed plans for a spinoff series of their hit streamer. The project, details of which have not been disclosed, is just one of five projects the brothers have unveiled as part of their nine-figure overall deal for Netflix. Other projects include a new stage play set in his world Stranger Things as well as a series adaptation by Stephen King and Peter Straub The Talisman and a live stream of the anime performance Death note. The fifth work on slate is an original series of Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance twins Jeffrey Andis and Will Matthews.

All five projects, which are currently in development, will be produced through the Duffers’ new banner Upside Down Pictures, which will be headed by Hilary Leavitt. The Duffers signed a nine-figure overall deal with Netflix in 2019. All five projects are produced for Netflix as part of the deal, which also covers the previously announced fifth and final season of Stranger Things.
“It wasn’t long before our first meeting with Hillary, where we bonded over movies like Jaws, Home Alone and Speed, to know we had found a kindred spirit. Hilary’s passion for storytelling is perhaps only matched by her passion for the storytellers themselves, whom she fiercely protects. No wonder so many writers and directors are drawn to work with her. She is indeed a rare talent and we are extremely grateful to have her on our side as we build Upside Down Pictures,” the Duffers said in a joint statement Wednesday.
The Duffers say Upside Down Pictures will aim to create the kind of stories that inspired them growing up — “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where grand spectacle coexists with intimate character work, where the heart wins out over cynicism.”
“I remember the first movie I saw in the theater, the first VHS tape I got for Christmas, the first international mono I bid on eBay because it was cooler than the domestic one. And the first time I met Matt and Ross. All of those seminal moments led to this ridiculously cool opportunity to create a company with the Duffer brothers where we make movies and TV because we love movies and TV. This love is at the core of Upside Down Pictures, where we get to collaborate with other artists on projects across the spectrum of genres. We all love what we do and are excited to do more and more,” said Leavitt.
The live action Stranger Things The spinoff is based on an original idea by the Duffers. Upside Down will produce alongside Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps. The Stranger Things The stage play is set within the world and mythology of the show and is produced by Sonia Friedman, Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot, The Reader) and Netflix. Daldry will also direct. 21 Laps serves as an associate producer. The Talisman Produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television, with Stranger Things Executive producer Curtis Gwinn was added as creator. Additional details were not immediately available.
The Talisman teased as part of its season four finale Stranger Things. In one of the final scenes, Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) reads an excerpt from the book to his girlfriend Max (Sadie Sink), as her fate remains up in the air heading into the final season. The Hollywood Reporter it was exclusively revealed that the Duffers and King will be working together on the series in 2021.
Not surprisingly, his world Stranger Things will be extended to Netflix. The streamer, which saw its first subscriber loss in a decade, is looking for big IP as it looks to continue to compete with deep vaults on other platforms. Stranger Things it was a surprise for Netflix, which owns the series as an original. The streamer is already expanding Shonda Rhimes’ world Bridgerton and The Witcher with spinoffs in the pipeline as it looks to cash in on its larger properties.
“Matt and Ross are an extremely unique talent with such a clear and distinct vision. It’s all about the details — it’s no accident Stranger Things has pierced the zeitgeist to become the epic pop culture phenomenon it is today. We are excited to continue telling new stories with them as they grow Upside Down Pictures and to welcome Hilary as a creative partner,” said Ted Sarandos of Netflix.
For her part, Leavitt began her career at BBC America, where she grew Orphan black. After that, he had roles in developing shows, including for Netflix Ozark, of Hulu The great thing and Apple Bright girls.
