Arch Manning heads to Texas.
The five-star general wrote on Twitter on Thursday that he was verbally committed to the Longhorns. Manning is the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning and the top recruit in the 2023 high school class according to Rivals.
Manning’s commitment to Texas is a huge win for the Longhorns and coach Steve Sarkisian. Texas competed with teams such as Alabama and Georgia – the two teams that played for the national title in January – to secure Manning’s services. And now Manning will be the general that Texas fans hope will bring the team back to the national title race.
Manning, the son of Manning’s older brother, Cooper, has been a well-known QB recruit since stepping down for Isidore Newman in New Orleans. His recruitment over the past year has been one of the highest profiles in recent years, as major projects across the country have been competing for his services.
Manning vs. Quinn Ewers?
Manning’s possible arrival – verbal commitments are non-binding and not official until a player signs a letter of intent – is the second major QB acquisition for Texas in many years. The school acquired Quinn Evers from Texas as a transfer in December after Evers spent a season in Ohio after skipping high school football.
Ewers was the QB top recruiter in the 2021 division and was considered a favorite as the Longhorns’ main general in 2022 ahead of the Hudson Card. With Owers entering his second season, he and Manning are well on their way to becoming the subject of an incredibly high profile quarterback competition ahead of the 2023 season.
We received a hint that Alabama could exit the Manning Games earlier in the spring when four-star QB Eli Holstein committed to Crimson Tide. Holstein is the No. 5 pro-style QB in the 2023 category and will likely arrive in Tuscaloosa as Bryce Young becomes a professional. Heisman’s top winner enters his third season in college football in 2022 and could enter the NFL Draft after the season.
Georgia, meanwhile, have Stetson Bennett returning as their main general for another season and a five-star recruit waiting on the wings. Brock Vandagriff was a five-star recruit in the 2021 category and the No. 2 pro-style QB in his class.
Texas has been struggling since 2009
Manning is now set to join a Texas program that longs for the glory days of the McBrown era. The Longhorns have won 10 games in a season only once since winning 13-1 and losing to Alabama in the BCS title game at the end of the 2009 season. Sarkisian is the team’s third coach since the school split with Brown after the 2013 season and the Longhorns just set a 5-7 record in 2021.
A big reason for the Texas games was the inconsistent play of the generals. Four-year-old key Sam Ehlinger was the best general since Colt McCoy and it is no coincidence that Texas’s best season since that appearance at BCS came in 2018. The Longhorns went 10-4 that season as Ehlinger completed 65% of the his passes and had a total of 41 touchdowns.
Card and Casey Thompson split their time as quarterbacks for the Longhorns in 2021 as Texas famously lost to Kansas amid a six-game losing streak that put the school out of action. Texas led Oklahoma 41-23 with 2:45 for the fourth quarter before losing that game 55-48 in a late touchdown by Kennedy Brooks. This defeat led the Longhorns to a dead end from which they broke out only in the last week of the season with the victory over Kansas State.
Sarkisian probably sold Manning to Texas thanks to his previous work with top college generals. Sarkisian was an assistant at the USC when the Trojans ran hard for college football with Matt Lenaard and Reggie Bush, and the former Washington and USC coach was Alabama’s attacking coordinator before heading to Austin. In Alabama, Sarkisian worked with Tua Tagovailoa and McJones after spending two years as an attack coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
Manning ready to continue the tradition of the SEC family
Arch Manning’s commitment to Texas means he will be the fourth Manning to play college football at the SEC each time Texas attends the conference. Grandpa Archie played in Ole Miss before joining the New Orleans Saints and Eli also played for the Rebels. Peyton moved to Tennessee before continuing his career at the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos.
