Peta Murgatroyd reveals she lost 3 pregnancies in the last 2 years, including when her husband Maks Chmerkovskiy was in Ukraine

Peta Murgatroyd and Maks Chmerkovskiy talk about losing a pregnancy as they try to expand their family.

The couple, known for their legs Dancing with the Stars, revealed in People magazine that Murgatroyd has suffered three miscarriages in the last two years. The most recent was when Chmerkovskiy, her husband since 2017, was abroad in Ukraine.

“I definitely wanted to keep my miscarriages a deep dark secret for the rest of my life,” admitted the 35-year-old Australian professional dancer. However, opening up about her fight, “I feel like I can breathe now. I feel like I’m not carrying this … backpack. I can let this secret come out and let everyone know.” Especially people on social media, who said they ask her “every day” when she will have another child.

Murgatroyd – who has a 5-year-old son Shai with Chmerkovskiy – said they have been trying to expand their family for years. She traveled around the world, from her headquarters in Malibu, California, hoping to conceive while her husband was abroad filming a series of reality shows. World of Dance Ukraine.

She shared her grief after her first miscarriage on a Whole Foods countertop in the fall of 2020.

“It was so shocking,” said Murgatroyd, who was five weeks pregnant at the time. “I was walking [into the store] and as soon as they started happening … I was sitting in the bathroom and crying. I’m surprised no one came in because I cried so much and cried, one of those deep cries. “This was something he would probably live with for the rest of my life, to be alone in this toilet, to know what was going on and not be able to stop it.”

Murgatroyd said she felt “completely ashamed, finally ashamed” – and Chmerkovskiy called it the lowest point in their relationship. “I think the darkest part is when the person you are in love with calls you and tells you he had a miscarriage in the bathroom, as dark as it can be,” he said.

Murgatroyd said she spent “months and months” crying and wondering what she had done wrong. “I’m someone who is proud of her health. I exercise every day. But as I understand it, this is not really in line with the reproductive system.”

Nine months later, Murgatroyd said she was pregnant again and things started to go well. He planned to fly to New York, where Chmerkovskiy, 42, worked, to surprise him with the news. Just before he was about to fly out, he fired again.

“I had to call him and tell him ‘It happened again,'” he recalls. “This was the first time I heard him get very upset, which was hard to hear because I know how it affects him as well.”

The couple, along with their son, recently attended their baby shower DWTS girlfriend Sharna Burgess, who is expecting her first child with Brian Austin Green:

Last October, it happened again. He explained that before that, he had traveled to Ukraine, where Chmerkovskiy judged the country’s version of DWTS, in the hope of arrest. Unaware that they were successful, he returned home and was attacked by COVID. She said her body was obviously unable to cope with the disease and maintain the early stages of her pregnancy.

She remembered calling the ambulance from the floor of her son’s bedroom because she could not move completely. At the hospital, Murgatroyd said the doctor asked her if she knew she was pregnant. Chmerkovskiy, on the loudspeaker and unable to hear the whole exchange, began to celebrate – until the doctor made it clear that Murgatroyd had already lost the baby.

“In order not to be there [with her]… “said Tzmerkovsky. “It makes you feel helpless.”

The couple has since worked with a team of fertility doctors and has begun IVF. Murgatroyd was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal imbalance that can cause ovulation problems, leading to infertility. PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility, affecting 6% to 12% (up to 5 million) of women of childbearing age in the United States.

“I’m in a much happier place. I got answers,” said Murgatroyd, who is optimistic they will be able to give Shai a baby sister. “I have no words but hope and positivity. I cross my fingers that this will work.”

Chmerkovskiy added, “I’m trying to do my best to support Peta. I’m a changed person because of this experience. I think if you look around you will find that most of your friends have had problems. [trying to conceive]. I realized that this is more common and this is not discussed. “

Earlier this year, Chmerkovskiy was in Ukraine filming a dance show as Russia invaded and war broke out. Chmerkovskiy, who was born in the country but immigrated to the United States at the age of 14, recorded what he saw and his journey away from the country. The emotional reunion of the couple in Los Angeles was captured on camera.

“Those eight to nine days he was there were like – I thought he was going to die for sure because he could not leave Kyiv,” Murgatroyd said earlier this month. And that was the hardest thing. “Those eight days were so long, so tiring.”
