Newly promoted Cruz, Madris spark Pirates, defeated the Cubs 12-1

PITSBURG (AP) – Newly promoted Oneil Cruz led four laps and Bligh Madris scored three hits in his Premier League debut, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-1 at the Chicago Cubs on Monday night.

Both rookies were called from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier in the day and delivered immediately.

Cruz, considered Pittsburgh’s top prospect, scored a three-pointer double in the deep central field that closed a third four-in-a-row streak to push the Pirates to a 7-0 lead. He played in the third major league game of his career.

The 6-foot-7 Cruz also hit an RBI single in a seventh-five run as the Pirates set a high running season. He started the last two games of last season, when he became the highest arm in the history of the big league.

Madris scored a two-track single in the second inning in his first at-bat the majors. The outfielder made a three-row appearance that included the first of Hoy Park’s two sacrificial flies.

Madris became the first Pirates player to have a three-hit game in his debut since Jason Kendall in 1996.

JT Brubaker (1-7) scored six innings without a score for his first victory since last August 24, in a period of 14 starts.

Brubaker fired five shots while scoring five and walking three. He has 2.65 ERA in his last six starts.

The Pirates took advantage of five walks by rookie Caleb Kilian (0-2), who scored for seven straight in 2 1/3 innings. Killian made his third career start.

Daniel Vogelbach scored a double double in a row in the Pirates’ big seventh period and Tyler Heinemann’s double RBI made it 12-1.

The Cubs made their way to seventh place in Ian Happ’s single. Hap, Rafael Ortega and Nico Herner each had two hits.

Both teams entered Monday having lost 11 of their last 13 games.

HERE THE CHILDREN COME

Cruz hit 0.232 with nine home games and 11 steals in 55 games in Indianapolis. Madris became the 12th Pirates player to make his league debut this year.

Cruz is the third shortstop in league history to have seven RBIs in his first three career games alongside Hall of Famer Paul Molitor and Trevor Story.

Madris became the first Pirates player to win a RBI and a stolen base in his first major league game since Andrew McCutchen in 2009.

The Cubs recalled out Nelson Velazquez from Triple-A Iowa and selected right-hander Adrian Sampson on the same team.

Velazquez, the MVP of the Arizona Fall League last year, is one of 15 rookies to see action for the Cubs this season. It debuted on May 30.

DARK OF THE SKIUROS

The game was delayed for a few minutes at the bottom of the second period when a squirrel ran onto the court.

The squirrel appeared to enter from the stands on the third side of the base. He then turned to the left corner of the field.

Three members of the ground crew were able to persuade the creature to come out of the field through the bullpen gate.

The Pirates have not decided who will take Thompson’s place in the rotation.
