Iron

Dr. Jacob Hascalovici MD, PhD, Clearing Our General Practitioner says, “Whereas iron supplements can benefit people with anemia, its usefulness copper and iron supplementation it falls quickly for women after the age of 50. In fact, these supplements may actually increase your risk for Alzheimer’s and heart disease, so it’s recommended that you avoid them after about 50. Copper and iron can be found in certain meats, leafy greens, beans and nuts.”

Packaged foods with added vitamins and minerals

Becca Rhoades, PharmDPharmacist at Ella Community Pharmacy shares, “Everyone needs the required daily dose of multivitamins, but too much can be harmful. Excess vitamin B6 can cause neurological problems such as imbalance and peripheral neuropathy. Garlic and ginger supplements in addition to natural food sources can increase the risk of bleeding in those taking blood thinners. Excess vitamin A as we age can cause toxicity and increase the risk of osteoporosis. Consult a provider or pharmacist before eating foods such as energy bars and protein powders that claim vitamin/mineral supplementation.”

Ashwagandha

Trista BestMPH, RD, LD says, “Herbal supplements are becoming more popular and common across ages and generations. However, there is reason to be cautious before adding one to your daily regimen, especially for people over 50. Ashwagandha, an herb has been used for centuries for its many medicinal purposes, but those over 50 should reconsider.This herbal supplement can cause blood pressure to drop to dangerously low levels, especially for those taking blood pressure medication .The same is true for those with diabetes or at risk for blood sugar conditions, ashwagandha can interfere with diabetes medications and cause blood sugar to drop too low.”

Biotin

Rachel Fine, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with The Pointe Nutrition states, “I do not recommend a biotin supplement, especially one marketed for hair, nails, and skin. Although biotin deficiency is known to cause symptoms such as dry, thinning hair, biotin deficiency is very rare and the recommended daily intake of biotin is one that can be easily obtained from our diet by including foods such as eggs, seeds and nuts. research shows that biotin may be deficient in those experiencing hair loss, there is currently insufficient data to support the use of biotin supplements in the treatment of thinning hair.”

Detox supplements

Lisa Richards, nutritionist and author of Candida Diet explains, “It can be tempting to turn to a detox supplement as your metabolism begins to slow and the weight slowly creeps on. After age 50 it can be difficult to lose that weight, but the promise of a quick jump start in weight loss that Detox supplements offer can be dangerous for people in this age group and older. These supplements can often cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal ailments. This can lead to nutrient deficiencies, electrolyte imbalances, dehydration and dysbiosis of the gut. For people over 50 these side effects can worsen pre-existing health conditions. Dehydration can increase the risk of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and even seizures. Nutrient deficiencies can weaken the immune system , among many other serious problems, which you can set put this group of people at higher risk for disease.”
