In a surprising development, Warner Bros. will no longer be released Bat girl, the DC movie that has already wrapped filming and was expected to arrive on HBO Max this year. The unusual move comes after a change in leadership at Warners, with newly installed Warner Bros. CEO Discovery CEO David Zaslav to prioritize cost-cutting measures and refocus Warners on theatrical films rather than creating projects directly for streaming, as was the priority for the former WarnerMedia. CEO Jason Kilar.
Bat girl it had a budget of around $80 million, with costs rising to nearly $90 million due to COVID-19 protocols. It’s a hefty sum, but significantly lower than DC’s cinematic releases, so the film is said to lack the spectacle audiences expect from DC fare. (Batmanreleased in March, had a budget of $185 million, before marketing costs.) Warners also decided to discontinue its animation Scoob!: Vacation Inn which had a budget of around $40 million.

Insiders say big-budget films made straight for streaming no longer make financial sense under the company’s new strategy. In June, Zaslav tapped MGM’s Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to run Warners, replacing Toby Emmerich.
Warner Bros. Discover leadership was looking to find $3 billion in cost savings after the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery in April. Major cuts along the way for the conglomerate include streaming service CNN+, which cost $300 million before pulling the plug a month after launch, and JJ Abrams’ expensive HBO original Demimondewhich aimed to have a budget of over $200 million.
Meanwhile, HBO Max has narrowed its programming focus area to original, stylish The Gordita Chronicles after only one season, as part of a strategic move away from live-action programming for kids and family. Linear networks under Warner Bros’ Discovery umbrella, such as TNT and TBS, have also had originals cut in recent months.
Under Kilar, Warners broke the theatrical window, sending the 2021 day-and-date to HBO Max in a one-year experiment. Now, Zaslav seems to be building an overall picture to emphasize the importance of theatrical over streaming when it comes to original films.
Bat girl it had a winding road. Joss Whedon originally signed on to write and direct in 2017, then dropped out a year later. Bat girlIts directors, who work under the name Adil & Bilall, came on board in 2021 as they wanted to revive the Bad Boys privilege.
In January of this year, Grace shared the first photo of herself in costume, along with a clip from the comic Batgirl: Year One: “I use their expectations against them. This will be their weakness. It’s not mine. Let them all underestimate me… And when their guard is down and their pride is up, let me kick their butt.”
