Cole did not hit in 8th place, Yanks beat Rays 4-2 for 50th win

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – Gerrit Cole made a free-kick in the eighth period, Aaron Hicks scored a tiebreak in the ninth as Manuel Margot hit the wall of the right pitch and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 at night. on Monday for their 50th victory.

New York has won 17 of its last 19 games and a 50-17 start is the best in the major leagues since the Seattle Mariners in 2001. The Yankees opened a 14-game lead over third-placed Tampa Bay in the AL East.

Cole scored 12 and walked three, allowing one run and one hit in 7 1/3 innings. Cole scored six in a row at one point and took a 2-0 lead when Isaac Paredes landed a slider on his 105th pitch off the embankment and in the center field. On June 3, Cole made 6 2/3 perfect appearances in Detroit.

Clay Holmes (5-0) led 2-0 and allowed his first streak from day one, ending a 31 1/3 streak without a score.

Anthony Rizzo had a first-half home run by Shane McClanahan, and the Yankees scored in the seventh in a mistake by first-choice Ji-Man Choi, the 45th unbeaten streak of the major league allowed by the Rays.

With a score of 2-2, Josh Donaldson outscored Jason Adam (0-2) with an out in the ninth and Hicks, beating 0.321 in June, led a change hanging high from the wall of the right court. Margot fell on the pitch as center-back Brett Phillips took the ball and Donaldson scored. Rays manager Kevin Cash and a sports coach went to Margot, who appeared to be in pain and kneeling, and left the pitch in a wheelchair.

Jose Trevino followed with a sacrificial fly.

Wandy Peralta put in the ninth for his second save and the Yankees improved to 6-2 against the Rays this season, beating Josh Lowe by two goals and withdrawing Francisco Mejia in a flyout.

After Paredes spotted a clearly deflated Cole, Lowe went to Aaron Judge on the center wall and Holmes was relieved.

Mejia doubled the right-hand line and Yandy Diaz hit a soft veteran at Holmes, who threw in first place for the out as only the second of the 13 runners he inherited this season scored.

Margot hit a bouncer on the side of the third base and Holmes’s throw in the first was out of line and not on time, as Margot arrived with a single and Mechia scored to equalize at 2-2.

Rizzo scored his 19th home win of the season and became just the second left-hander to beat McClanahan this year after Seattle’s Jesse Winker.
